Plot Diagram - Remember the Titans
Mckay Stephenson

When watching Remember the Titans, the question was presented, does this movie follow the traditionally conventions of the plot diagram. To answer this question completely one must go over all the parts of the plot diagram in relation to the movie. The parts of a plot diagram are: the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
The plot diagram begins with the exposition. During this time things like the setting, characters, and mood are presented. For example, in Remember the Titans, it started off by showing black and white civil unrest in Alexandria, Virginia because of a federal mandate causing the high schools to begin desegregating. Because of this, T.C. Williams High School is formed and the events that follow are shown through the eyes of T.C. William’s football team, the Titans. During this time the main characters are set up. Examples of this would be the introducing of Coach Yost, the current head football coach, Coach Boone, the new African American assistant coach, team captain Gerry Bertier, and Julius Campbell, said to be one of the finest defensive in the state if pushed.
The rising action is what takes up the most area of the plot diagram. This is shown beautifully in Remember the Titans because there are so many smaller conflicts along with their resolutions occurring before the overall climax. Several of the bigger examples from the movie would be: Coach Boone being made head football coach of the titans, the contentions between the team at their football camp, learning Coach Boone would be fired if he lost a game, Coach Yost’s induction into the high school football hall of fame being taken from him, and when team captain Gerry Bertier is hit by a big truck paralyzing him. These of course are only a very small fraction of the events that occur that bring the audience along up until the ultimate point, the Climax.
The Climax of remember the Titans is easily debatable because there are so many that it could be. I think that the ultimate climax is at the 3A State Football Championship when Jerry Harris runs the football in for a touchdown to win the state championship for the Titans. After this point things seem to slow down and the intense action of the story is ended. This is the next part of the plot diagram, the falling action.
The falling action is basically just the events after the climax that assists in winding to story down to a close. In Remember the Titans, this occurs fairly quickly with the story’s narrator, Coach Yost’s daughter Sheryl, explaining that the Titans danced their way into history with their 13 and 0 perfect season. For example it told us that Gerry Bertier won a gold medal in the Paralympics. It then told us that Gerry died 10 years later leading us into the final part of the plot diagram.
The resolution of this movie occurred extremely fast at Gerry’s funeral. It brings up the argument that people think the black and white people can’t coexist, but there, the Titans make it work. Sheryl explains that they do have their disagreements, but before reaching for hate, they always remember the titans. This is followed with a happier mood by ending explaining what became of the rest of the team and coaches.

I believe that this movie does follow the plot diagram. It seemed to flow starting with the exposition, to the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and ended with the resolution. This however is because of my interpretation of the plot diagram and how Remember the Titans fit into it. This interpretation is obviously not the only correct answer or the only way Remember the Titans can fit into the plot diagram
